Old Town San Diego State Historic Park offers visitors a glimpse into the early days of San Diego, showcasing restored historic buildings and cultural exhibits. A standout feature within the park is the Lithomosaic installation, a collaboration between artist Michael Miskwish and Lithomosaic artist Wick Alexander. This artwork presents a celestial diagram resembling a sand painting, reflecting the Kumeyaay people’s interpretation of the night sky. The mosaic includes constellations associated with spirit animals, sacred mountains, and a representation of the Milky Way Galaxy, all meticulously crafted to honor indigenous heritage.

The Lithomosaic was created using integral-color porcelain tiles for subtlety and reflectivity, with astrological formations highlighted in smalti glass to add contrast and vibrancy. The Milky Way is represented by an arc of Lithocrete-seeded white aggregates, interspersed with artist-designed glass hexagons, enlivening the background and enhancing the “sand painting” effect. This installation not only beautifies the park but also educates visitors about the rich astronomical traditions of the Kumeyaay people, fostering a deeper appreciation for indigenous cultures.
